The awning has a load bearing structure, a roller and a canvas which is attached to a load bar. It has hinged arms each consisting of two half arms, a fixed rear section, attached to the building and a front section attached to the load bar. One or both of the arms is made out of a single piece, consisting of a body (10, 20) and two joints (11, 12, 21, 22). Two of these joint components (12, 22) are joined to form a complete, hinged arm (5). The other two components (11, 21) are attached respectively to the building (1) and the load bar (6). The arms and the hinge components are moulded in a composite material. In cross section the two sections are asymmetrical to respond to the different stresses to which they are exposed. In cross section they vary lengthwise in shape and/or in size and may be arched.
