The invention concerns the use of addition products of 3-8 moles of ethylene oxide on aliphatic amines with 10 to 18 carbon atoms at concentrations of 0.005 to 3 % by wt. in aqueous solutions for the cleaning or abrasive mechanical treatment, e.g. polishing, of hard surfaces. The solutions contain, in addition, 0.0005 to 5 % by wt. of straight-chain or branched-chain carboxylic acids with 6 to 10 C-atoms or anions of such acids and/or 0.005 to 6 % by wt. of organic and/or inorganic chelating agents. The invention also concerns the use of aqueous or powder-form concentrates for preparing such solutions by dilution with water. A preferred use is the cleaning of painted and plastic surfaces, as well as the polishing of metals.
