<p>An active steering system (20) is provided for a vehicle in which an associated pair of wheels which are aligned to be parallel to a longitudinal axis (10) of the vehicle for linear travel of the vehicle, are adapted to be angularly orientated when the vehicle travels a curved path so as to create a differential angle between the two wheels about the centre of curvature (14) of the path. The wheel nearer to the centre of curvature (14), the inner wheel, is orientated at a larger angle to the direction of travel of the vehicle than the other, outer wheel. The wheels are angularly orientated by motive means comprising a variety of fluid operated piston and cylinder assemblies. These have at least one piston rod connected to a mounting for a wheel and acting on the wheel to turn it in response to a steering movement of the vehicle. An adjustable connection may be provided between the piston rod and the mounting for the wheel. <IMAGE></p> |
