A detergent composition comprising an alkyl phosphate surfactant and an ether acetate surfactant represented by the general formula (3): R<4>-O-(CH2CH2O)p-CH2CO2X<3> (wherein R<4> repreents C8-C18 alkyl or alkenyl; X<3> represents hydrogen, alkali metal, triethanolammonium or ammonium; and p represents a number of 3 to 15). It exhibits an excellent detergency against the skin or hair and is lowly irritative. Even when the composition contains the alkyl phosphate in a concentration of 30 wt. % or above, it does not suffer viscosity rise and can readily be compounded with a third component.
