A process for the preparation of imidazopyridine derivatives of the general formula entails a 2-amino-3-nitropyridine being hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, and the hydrogenation product being condensed with a carboxylic acid, which is simultaneously present in the reaction mixture, to give the final product. The imidazopyridine derivatives are intermediates for the preparation of angiotensin II antagonists.
