<p>Compounds of the formula <FORM:1094220/C2/1> wherein each R represents hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl radical containing not more than 10 carbon atoms and each R1 represents hydrogen or an alkyl radical, at least two of the substituents represented by R1 being hydrogen, and preparation thereof by reacting an alkali metal salt, e.g. the sodium, potassium or lithium salt, of phthalimide or a suitably substituted derivative thereof with the appropriate a -halogen substituted e -caprolactam, wherein the halogen substituent can be bromine, iodine or chlorine, at a temperature in the range 70 DEG to 200 DEG C., in the presence of a solvent when the reaction temperature is below the melting point of the e -caprolactam. According to a further embodiment of the invention a -amino-e -caprolactams can be obtained by reacting a compound of the above general formula with hydrazine hydrate in an inert organic solvent at elevated temperature. The preparation of a -amino- and a -phthalimido-substituted caprolactams is described.</p> |
