Gaseous alpha-olefins (e.g. propylene) are freed from catalyst poisons by scrubbing at a temperature below 40 DEG C. with a solution in an inert hydrocarbon solvent of one or more of the following organo-aluminium compounds: aluminium trimethyl, aluminium triethyl, aluminium tripropyl, aluminium trihexyl, aluminium triisobutyl, aluminium triphenyl, diphenyl aluminium monochloride, phenyl aluminium dichloride, ethyl aluminium dichloride, diethyl aluminium monochloride, and tri(p-tolyl) aluminium. The solvent may be a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, e.g. mineral spirits of boiling range 177-192 DEG C. The process is preferably operated in countercurrent in a column packed with inert baffling material, e.g. Raschig rings, the olefin passing upwards through the downward-flowing solution.
|
