PURPOSE:To obtain an optically active 2-(4-hydroxy)phenylpropionic acid derivative and its antipode ester useful as an intermediate for a medicine, a liquid crystal compound, etc., optically selectively in high yield by treating an ester of an optically active 2-(4-hydroxy)phenylpropionic acid derivative with an enzyme derived from a bacterium. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of both of enantiomers of an ester of an optically active 2-(4-hydroxy)phenylpropionic acid derivative of formula I (R1 is H, methyl, t-butyl or benzyl; R2 is quaternary amino, a lower alkoxy, oxysulfonyl or a lower alkyl which may contain a group such as a halogen or not; (*) is center of activity) [e.g. 2-(4-hydroxy)phenylpropionic acid methoxyethyl ester] or its salt is treated with an enzyme derived from a bacterium [e.g. Klebsiella oxytoca SNSM87 strain (FERM P-12953)], its bacterium or a material treated with the bacterium and optically selectively hydrolyzed to give the objective carboxylic acid compound derivative of formula II and its antipode ester. |
