PURPOSE: To provide an interferometer-like open loop type optical fiber style gyroscope. CONSTITUTION: In an open loop type gyroscope, CW beam and CCW beam from a common light supply 10 pass the circumference of the coil 20 of an optical fiber in opposite direction and meet again on a detector 24. In a phase modulator 22, each step has a period equivalent to the running time of the coil 20 and a step-like phase modulation in which zero is assigned to every other step is added thereto. Intermediate steps increase linearly from zero to 2π. Under such a condition as no modulation, CW beam and CCW beam are summed up on a detector 24 and then summed up intensity changes in form of cosine of rate. Such modulation stated above causes sampling of two points, existent on each side of a cosine fringe and are further gradually moving as the amplitude of step-like modulation increases, to take place. The sample data are treated to measure the rate imprinted on a gyroscope.
