DEMULTIPLEXER FOR SEPARATING OPTICAL SIGNAL

PURPOSE: To divide a data stream of a high bit rate into streams of low bit rates by using a prescribed optical loop mirror. CONSTITUTION: An input bit stream is supplied to an optical fiber 10 for input connected to a coupler 12. For example, only a pulse from a channel 1 is supplied to an optical fiber 14 for output connected to the coupler 12. The pulse from the other multiplexed channel is suppressed from an output bit stream and only the pulse from a desired channel appears on the optical fiber 14. An optical fiber loop 16 is composed of a dispersion-shifted optical fiber having an effective cross section A of 30 μm<2> and a length of about 6.9 km and connected to the coupler 12. When no switching pulse is inputted to the loop, 16, a multiplexer functions to pulses as a perfect mirror by means of the fiber 10 and no output pulse appears on the fiber 14.
