An integrally formed annular plastic bearing isolator (30, 130) for ball and tapered roller bearings (14, 50) journalling power transmission shafts (S, S min ). The isolator (30, 130) has a plurality of circumferentially spaced energy absorbing pads (42, 142) extending radially from the inner periphery thereof. The inner surface of the energy absorbing pads (42, 142) are at least an interference fit with the outer bearing race (20, 60) and have a predetermined radial spring rate for absorbing bearing movement. A plurality of circumferentially spaced stop pads (44, 144) alternate with the energy absorbing pads (42, 142) and are spaced radially ( DELTA r, DELTA r min ) from the outer race (20, 60) to permit limited radial compression of the energy absorbing pads (42, 142). For tapered roller bearings (50) a plurality of radially inwardly extending circumferentially spaced tabs (146) each having axially extending pads (147) thereon are provided for absorbing axial movement of the outer race (60). <IMAGE> |
