System for extinguishing fires in confined spaces (10), such as engine rooms of ships. The system comprises general nozzles (20) disposed above and/or on the sides of the space to be protected for general fire extinguishment in the space, and/or spot nozzles (22, 23) disposed around the objects in the space to be protected which are susceptible to fire, such as engines (12, 14), for extinguishing fires in them. At least a portion of the nozzles (36) consists of low-pressure nozzles in which there are wings (50, 52) and from which extinguishing water is sprayed at a pressure < 12 bar, and preferably at a pressure of 2-12 bar, as water sprays which consist of drops of various sizes. The drops are, due to the rotating movement caused by the wings, distributed in the water spray so that the frequency of the drops having larger diameters is greater at the periphery of the water spray than in the inner part of it, and correspondingly, the frequency of the drops having smaller diameters is greater in the inner part of the water spray than at its periphery.
