Isopentene is produced in a high yield by the method wherein a hydrocarbon mixture containing isobutene and n-butene is brought into contact with a catalyst which has been prepared by depositing a molybdenum compound and at least one additional metal compound such as cobalt, tin, silver, zinc, cadmium, lead, bismuth or antimony compound, on an alumina carrier and calcining the compounds, deposited thereon, the contact being carried out in the presence of steam in an amount of 0.1 to 25% based on the volume of the hydrocarbon mixture and calculated in terms of volume under standard conditions of 0 DEG C and 760 mmHg in order to disproportionate the hydrocarbon mixture, and the resultant isopentene is isolated from the reaction mixture.
