[Also in Division C2] Peroxides of the general formula X n -R p -Y m are used as initiators in free radical polymerizations, wherein X is where B is Br or Cl; R is a di-, tri- or tetravalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical and Y is a radical containing a peroxy group. Amongst the examples pre-formed polymers are treated with the peroxides to introduce peroxide groups into the chains and these are then polymerized with an ethylenic monomer to give a block copolymer, e.g. cellulose is reacted with 2-(t-butylperoxycarbonyl)-ethyl chloroformate and polymerized with styrene, a mono-hydroxylterminated polyether is reacted with bis-[4- (chloroformyl)butyryl] peroxide and polymerized with polystyrene, a hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene is reacted with bis-(4-chloroformyl butyryl) peroxide and polymerized with styrene and a polyester is prepared by polymerizing 1,4-butanediol, succinoyl dichloride and t - butyl - 2,4 - dichloroformyl - 5 - peroxybenzoate. |
