[Also in Divisions A5 and C3] The invention comprises the active sweetening principle of the berries of Synsepalus dulcificum, to which the name "miraculin" is given. Miraculin may be extracted from the berries by a solubilising agent which may be polyvinyl pyrrolidone, sorbitan mono-oleate dipolyethylene glycol ether, a polyethylene glycol, a protein, a peptone, caffeine, aluminium sulphate, a hydroxycarboxylic acid, an acylated reuraminic acid, a protamine, a polypeptide or a polyamine. It is a glycoprotein. It may be added to foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and agents for the care of the mouth or teeth; examples include yoghurt, buttermilk, junket, mayonnaise, fruit juices, jam, marmalade, acetylsalicylic acid and vitamin C. It may also be compressed into tablets with fillers such as milk powder, lactose and starch derivatives. |
