The invention pertains to a machine for attaching buttons, rivets or the like, preferably to clothing, said buttons, rivets or the like consisting of an upper part and an under part, wherein material held between upper and lower clamping jaws is perforated by means of a ram stroke and wherein a carriage having an upper tool and a lower tool is displaced through convergence of upper and lower tools and the button parts carried therein are joined in an interlocking fit by means of a ram stroke. To perform the necessary perforation of the garment prior to attachment of the article, using the same machine and without changing the position of the garment, the invention provides that a ram-end attachment tool (36) is situated in holepunching position coaxially to a holepunching tool (26).
