The invention relates to a filter support element (1) for supporting filter media in flat filters, comprising a dimensionally stable composite body which has sheets (3 to 11) arranged in layers one above the other, which have a coarse-meshed net structure, are permanently joined together and are made of wire-shaped elements of streamlined cross-section. According to the invention, the mesh width and/or the thicknesses of the wire-shaped elements increase in the direction of flow and the uppermost net structure sheet (4) has a considerably smaller mesh width than the smallest dimension of the finest particle of the filter medium (2). In addition, this fine-meshed sheet (4) is protected by a net structure (3) of coarser mesh width and/or thickness of its wire-shaped elements.
