Combustion method producing low levels of pollutants and apparatus for same

A method for combusting a fossil material so as to produce an exhaust stream having a low level of pollutants. The fossil material is introduced into a fluidized bed combustor which is operated at a temperature of at least approximately 1775 DEG F. to produce a partially cleansed exhaust stream having a low level of N2O. SO2 is removed from the partially cleansed exhaust stream outside of the fluidized bed combustor to produce a cleansed exhaust stream having a low level of SO2. An apparatus is provided for performing the method of the invention.
