An intravascular medical device (10) having a structure (11) shaped and sized for introduction into the vascular system of a patient, the structure having biologically inert properties and a thrombolytic, agent (13) or an antithrombogenic agent (14). The thrombolytic agent advantageously dissolves or breaks up the formation of thrombus on the surface of the structure when placed in the vascular system of a patient. The antithrombogenic agent inhibits the formation of thrombus on the surface of the medical device. The structure also includes a biologically inert material (15) that forms either at least part of the base material of the device or a coating material (22) on the base material. The thrombolytic agent and/or antithrombogenic agent are homogeneously combined with the base and/or coating material.
