The fired ceramic composite includes: (a) a fabric based on aluminoborosilicate fibres, (b) a carbon-containing layer applied as coating onto this base fabric, (c) a layer of silicon carbide applied as a coating over this carbon-containing layer, and (d), applied as coating over this layer of silicon carbide, a mixture including silicon carbide and aluminium phosphate, in a molar ratio of silicon carbide to aluminium phosphate which is between approximately 1:1 and 50:1, and aluminoborosilicate particles in a proportion by weight of approximately 0.5 to 70 % by weight of the total mixture. The unfired coating composition, usable for reducing the gas permeability of a ceramic composite based on aluminoborosilicate coated with silicon carbide, includes: (a) a dispersion of metallic aluminium dissolved in phosphoric acid, (b) silicon carbide and aluminium phosphate in a sufficient proportion to produce, in the fired state, a molar ratio of silicon carbide to aluminium phosphate which is between approximately 1:1 and 50:1, and (c) aluminoborosilicate particles dispersed in this coating in a proportion by weight of between approximately 0.5 and 70 % by weight of the total mixture.
