A vehicle (10) comprising an internal combustion engine (20), a transmission unit (26) whose ratio can be adjusted continuously by means of a controlling element, and a mechanical gear unit (28) which can be set to different ratios by means of a number of sets of gear wheels (38, 30; 38, 42), can be improved as follows to allow it to be operated with simple means over the greatest possible range of speeds: a switching element is provided to allow switching from a first set of gear wheels to a second set (38, 30; 38, 42), a speed range control is provided for automatic changing of the gear wheel set (38, 30; 38, 42) when a switching signal is applied, this being done by having the speed range control in a first switching step actuate the switching unit in such a way that the latter terminates the mutual engagement of the first set of gear wheels (38, 30; 38, 42), in a second switching step and via the continuously variable transmission unit (26) approximate the peripheral speed of the gear wheels of the second set (38, 42; 38, 30) in the engagement area and, in a third switching step, cause the second gear wheel set (38, 42; 38, 30) to engage mutually. |
