PURPOSE:To provide a communication system equipped with high speed, wide band and high degree of freedom while including not only communication between existent LAN terminals but also communication between ATM terminals with a private system communication network. CONSTITUTION:A terminal housing means 102 houses terminals 101, and the data format of communication information to be communicated between those terminals is mutually transformed as needed with a data format at the terminals 101 and the cell data format of an asynchronous transfer mode or the like. A communication path setting means 103 is provided with a cell exchanging means or the like and independently and parallelly sets a communication path concerning communication information provided with a prescribed data format to be communicated between any arbitrary terminal housing means 102. Namely, cell exchange technique or the like based on the asynchronous transfer mode is applied to a private system network. On the other hand, a private system backborn network is constructed by using a gateway node for mutually connecting communication nodes 105 based on the cell data format of the asynchronous transfer mode or the like, the large scale private system network can be dealt with.
