An airbag for protecting the occupant of a vehicle from collision against a side wall of the vehicle is stowed in a folded fashion to the side of the occupant and is situated, when it has been filled, in the form of an elongated balloon between the occupant and the side wall, the airbag having a projecting continuation which runs in the direction of the head and neck region of the occupant and supports the head in good time when the body collides.
