A composition for topical application to the skin which is used for lightening of skin and for eliminating or lightening dark spots on the skin is described. The composition is in the form of solutions, lotions, gels, creams or sprays and contains a combination of a flavonoid and ascorbic acid or a derivative thereof. This mixture exerts a synergistic effect. This composition can furthermore contain an agent to suppress the tyrosinase activity plus tocopherol or a derivative thereof. The compositions which contain a combination of ascorbic acid or a derivative thereof and a flavonoid display a potent effect. This effect is further enhanced by addition of a composition to reduce the tyrosinase activity by copper chelate formation, such as kojic acid, and/or by addition of a tocopherol or a derivative thereof.
