In the case of a method for evaluating electrical signals registered using one or more electrodes in the vicinity of nerve cells, for each electrode: (A) various basic signal shapes which correspond to various nerve cells are specified, (B) the registered signals are compared with the basic signal shapes and, on the basis of the comparison, in each case assigned to a defined signal shape or rejected and (C) with respect to each signal, the time and basic signal shape to which it was assigned are output. (a) The basic signal shapes are determined from registered and point-wise digitised signals and are point-wise representations of characteristic signal sections. (b) Each registered signal is point-wise digitised and compared with all basic signal shapes, (ba) the signal being shifted relative to the basic signal shapes and, in various relative positions, the deviation of the signal from the respective basic signal shape being determined in order to detect a minimum deviation, (bb) the minimum deviation being thereupon tested as to whether it has exceeded a predetermined limit value specific to the respective basic signal shape and (bc) the minimum deviation of the signal from the individual basic signal shapes being compared with each other while taking into account the length of the basic signal shape and the signal being assigned to the basic signal shape having the lowest relative minimum deviation or, insofar as the minimum deviations, in all cases ...
