A process is disclosed for inputting letters, digits, combinations of letters, symbols or the like in an input unit (1) with a keyboard (2) and a pointing device (3). The keyboard (2) and/or the pointing device (3) are operated with one hand without changing the position of the hand. By moving the pointing device (3) out of a zero zone (ZO) which constitutes a defined initial position and/or by actuating at least one key (T) of the keyboard (2), input pulses are generated. These input pulses are converted in the input unit (1) into letters, digits, combinations of letters, symbols or the like which are outputted through an output unit.
