[Classes 125 (ii) and 125 (iii)] A cardboard container has a body 1 with a crimple 3 below its top edge so that the upper part has a slightly larger diameter than the rest of the body. The sunken lid 6 is placed in position and the edges of lid and body are turned over together to form an outward bead. The walls of the lid and the body are pierced by prongs 9 to form a hold. To open the container the wall 1 is cut below the crimple 3 and the lid can be inverted as shown in Fig. 4 to serve as a removable cover. The beading and piercing are performed by the tool shown in Fig. 1. The beading tool 13 is lowered until the mandrel 10 bears on the lid 6 and the ring segments 7 on slides are brought together to hold the container. The sealing and beading tool is lowered and rotated ; the edges of the container and the lid are pressed into the groove 18 and are Tolled over outwardly by the friction pin 19. The tool then bears on the spring pressed sections 20 which have a groove forming a continuous beading groove with the groove 18. Further movement while the beading is being completed presses the sections 20 down against their springs. |
