On echo sonographic imaging by means of the invention the echos of needle tips on the screen are much brighter than is possible by means of "passive" measures for improvement of the scatter effect of the tips by appropriate shaping or the like. This is achieved with an additional device on the scanner by recording of the wire wave pulses which are coupled into the tip and by the subsequent generation of either (a) intensified wire pulses which emerge from the tip as longitudinal wave pulses and are superimposed on the normal scatter wave or (b) intensified electrical pulses which are directly admixed with the image signal. The time of active pulse emission is automatically determined electronically in each case.
