Microbial activity-inhibiting compositions especially applicable to industrial water treatment and to processes of manufacture, handling and treatment of paper, card, skin and wood. They are characterised in that they comprise alkylene, alkenylene and arylene rhodides with a fungicidal nature as active microbial principle, water soluble or insoluble solvents, and surfactant agents. The active principle in said compositions is preferably methylenebisthiocyanate, thiocyanomethylthiobenzothiazole or a mixture of both. The solvents in said compositions are, among those soluble in water, dimethylformamide, aliphatic alcohols, glycols and their esters and/or dimethylsulphoxide, and among those insoluble in water aliphatic and aromatic derivatives. The surfactants are preferably oxyethylenated alkylphenols, whether polymerised or not, or mixtures of the same with metal alkylarylsulphonates dissolved in hydrocarbons.
