PRODUCTION OF HYDROPHILIC CARBON FIBER AND CARBON FIBER PRODUCED THEREBY

PURPOSE:To perform hydrophilization treatment of a carbon fiber in high uniformity and efficiency. CONSTITUTION:A carbon fiber felt is immersed in an electrolytic solution containing a hydrophilic monomer such as acrylic acid and pyrrole, excess electrolytic solution is removed from the felt and the obtained wet carbon fiber felt is subjected to electrolytic polymerization. The hydrophilic monomer on the surface of the fiber is polymerized by the electrolytic polymerization to effect the hydrophilization of the carbon fiber in high uniformity and efficiency. The process also enables the graft polymerization of a hydrophilic monomer to the surface of a carbon fiber. Accordingly, the carbon fiber produced by this process has high hydrophilicity and wettability to matrix and is usable as a reinforcing material for various matrices such as concrete.
