In vitro detection, in a biological sample, of IgE-type antibodies (Ab) specific for thaumetopoein (I), or immunologically related peptides, comprises (1) contacting sample with (I) so that an immune complex may form and (2) detecting the complex. Also new are kits for this process comprising (I) fixed to a support; species-specific anti-IgE; label which can be fixed to the antibody; opt. developer reagent for the label and opt. positive and negative controls. Partic. (I) is isolated from processionary caterpillars of pine or oak (Thaumetopoea pityocampa or T.processionea). USE - The method is used to diagnose allergies to insects (esp. Lepidoptera caterpillars) which cause rashes. Also new (not claimed) is desensitisation against (I) using (I)-contg. extracts and treatment of such allergies (e.g. homeopathically). (I) is a protein of mol.wt. 28000 released from the irritant hairs of caterpillars and has now been found to be allergenic.
