PURPOSE:To increase produced photocarriers in an organic solar cell by a method wherein a photoconducting layer containing charge producing pigment and charge carrying material and specific disazo-system compound is employed as the charge producing carrier. CONSTITUTION:An organic solar cell is composed of a substrate 1 and an electrode 2, a photoconducting layer 3 and a transparent counter electrode 4 which are successively built up on the substrate 1. The photoconducting layer 3 contains disazo compound which is expressed by the formula (wherein A and B denote identical or different coupler residues) as charge producing pigment. As the compound has a benzoquinone framework as the center frame of the disazo pigment, the molecular polarization of excited pi electrons in the molecule can be in an efficient state. Further, as a large pi electron plane is provided, the stacking performance between molecules can be improved. With this constitution, a charge producing efficiency can be increased and a photoelectric conversion efficiency can be improved.
