The invention comprises compounds suitable for use as waxes which are esters of acids of the general formula: R CO[NR1(CH2)nCO]x-OH with a long-chain monohydric alcohol or a polyhydric alcohol, where R is substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon residue. R1 is hydrogen or methyl, n is an integer from 3-20 and x is an integer; and their preparation by direct esterification. "Long-chain" means containing 12-60 carbon atoms. The above acids may be prepared by reacting an acid RCOOH with a lactam; suitable acids contain non-aromatic hydrocarbon radicals of 10-40 C atoms, which may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or hydroaromatic and which may be connected with the carboxylic acid group through an aromatic radical; suitable lactams are butyro-, valero-, capro- and methylcaprolactams. The long-chain alcohol may be saturated or unsaturated; specified polyhydric alcohols are ethylene glycol, propane-, butane-, hexane-, cyclohexane-diol, diethylene glycol, trimethylol-ethane and -propane, glycerol, pentaerythritol and sorbitol. With the polyhydric alcohols, complete esterification is preferably effected.
