PURPOSE:To produce a compound useful as a raw material for pharmaceuticals, especially an antiulcer agent, from an easily and economically available raw material without producing by-products such as N-acylamine, by deacylating a chlorinated cresol derivative and reacting with a secondary amine. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I (R is alkyl or phenyl) is deacylated with a strong alkali such as sodium hydroxide in a protonic solvent at 0-30 deg.C, and the resultant phenol of formula II is made to react with the secondary amine of formula III (X and Y are alkyl which may form a ring) (e.g. dimethylamine, piperidine, etc.) in a protonic solvent at room temperature -50 deg.C to obtain the objective compound of formula IV. Preferably the first and the second steps are carried out in the same reactor and in the same solvent and the strong alkali used in the deacylation reaction of the first step is used as it is as a neutralizing agent of hydrogen chloride in the second step. |
