A process for converting a partially chlorinated ethane to a chlorinated ethylene comprises oxychlorinating the partially chlorinated ethane in the presence of a catalyst comprise a heavy metal chloride disposed on a g -alumina support. In an example, 1,2-dichlorethane, gaseous HCl and air are fed to a fluidised copper chloride-g -alumina catalyst and the product comprises perchloroethylene, 1,1,2-trichlorethane, 1,1,2,2-tetrachlorethane, pentachlorethane and hexachlorethane.ALSO:An oxychlorination catalyst is prepared by impregnating g -alumina granules of grain size 0,10-0,50 mm. with a saturated methanolic copper chloride solution, filtering and drying. |
