A METHOD FOR INHIBITING THE FORMATION OF UNDESIRABLE OXIDATION CONTAMINANTS IN CHLORINATED AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS

Chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons such as chlorobenzene can undergo oxidative coupling to form PCBs and also be oxidized to form other undesirable oxidation products such as dichlorobenzenes in the presence of oxidation catalysts such as ferric chloride. The oxidative formation of PCBs and dichlorobenzenes can be inhibited or substantially stopped by adding effective amounts of inhibiting agents to the chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons. Three groups of compounds disclosed as being effective inhibiting agents are non-chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, hindered phenols and aromatic isocyanates.
