Described are novel quinolinecarboxylic acids of the general formula wherein R<1> is C1-C4 alkyl, R<2> and R<3> each is identically or differently hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl, R<4> is cyclopropyl, phenyl, halo-phenyl, or thienyl optionally substituted by C1-C4 alkyl or halogen, and R<5> is halogen, or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof having a more potent and longer lasting antibacterial activities against G(+) and G(-) bacteria than known analogues.
