Telescopic covers prodn. - by welding plane cover elements together before folding operations

Mfr. is of a telescopic cover consisting of cover elements which can slide along one another longitudinally of the cover. Such elements always consist of a cover wall, two side walls and a back wall. Cover wall and both side walls are made of a plane sheet metal blank by a folding process. a) plane part (7), with material removed from appropriate regions to allow subsequent folding operations to take place, is laser welded to a plane part (5) which is to form the cover wall and both side walls of the resulting cover element; b) the two parts (5,7) are then jointly folded, with the material in the folding zones being stretched to form a crack-free, rounded outer contour. Part (7) forms the back wall of the cover element. Alternatively, a back wall is inserted into the part (7) which is this case is a profiled segment folded together with the part (5). Part (5) has a cpd. structure consisting of an inner plastics layer and an outer metal sheet which preferably is laser welded to the part (5). USE/ADVANTAGE - For mfr. of covers esp. for machine tool elements. Process is simplified resulting in cost savings.
