A coin controlled coupling is used to mechanically couple a number of supermarket trolleys together. Each trolley has a lock housing (1) fixed to the handle and this receives a key attached to an adjacent trolley. The key has a permanent magnet insert (8). When inserted into the lock a pivot mounted element with a metal latch (4) is attracted to the key. The latch enters a slot (9) in the key and is securely retained. The pivot mounted element has a drive slot shaped to receive a coin. When inserted the element can be moved through an angle to effect release. The coin is retained until the key is replaced.
