A tow is drawn from a bale and its normally interlaced fibers are separated from each other by applying to the fibers a positive or a negative electric charge so that the neighboring fibers repel each other, the separated fibers are contacted by particles of finely atomized plasticizer which carry electric charges of opposite polarity so that they are attracted to the separated fibers, such charging of the fibers and the application of plasticizer can take place prior or subsequent to at least partial conversion of the tow into a rod-like filler. Several tows can be treated simultaneously to thus enhance the output of the machine and/or to improve the quality of the products. |
