(A) A glass moulding for precision optics (esp. image prodn.) is made by producing a glass blank having high surface quality (at least corresponding to fire polishing) at least in the regions forming the optical faces, hot pressing the blank in a press mould having functional faces formed by hard, smooth, low wear functional layers (opt. contg. hard nitrides and/or carbides) with the requisite surface condition and quality, cooling the moulding in the press mould until sufficiently shape stable, demoulding and then fine cooling, the hot press mould being maintained in a protective gas atmos. or vacuum. The novelty is that (a) the functional layer (9,11) is a mechanically untreated, unstructured thin film with less than 5 microns thickness and less than 0.1 microns roughness depth and having high adhesion to a shape stable backing layer (13,15) of amorphous, monocrystalline or polycrystalline (below 0.5 microns grain size) material; and (b) at the start of pressing, the glass blank (61) and at least one of the functional faces (17,19) of the press mould (1) have a temp. difference of at least 30K but below the value at which there is a risk of inhomogeneities in and/or surface defects on the glass moulding. (B) A press mould for carrying out the process is also claimed.
