The alum block is cut with two parallel flat faces with the remainder of the surface being left rough. In a variant, the block can have three flat faces, the third one being perpendicular to the first two, and the rest of the block left rough. The block is obtd. from a large lump of alum rock, broken into smaller pieces which are then milled of sawn to produce the two or three flat faces. USE/ADVANTAGE - The block is used for its medicinal and pharmaceutical properties, esp. as an astringent and antiseptic. It is more convenient to package in standard-sized packaging
