The invention relates to a method for synchronising circuit elements in a digital telecommunications exchange with at least one central clock generator arrangement which is connected to the synchronisation and clock failure monitoring devices of the circuit elements via a bit clock line and a frame clock line. A first predefined string of signal conditions which is generated by the clock generator arrangement, is transmitted on the frame clock line and is at least two bits long is identified to the synchronisation devices of the circuit elements which are to be synchronised as a frame alignment word, and a second string of alternating signal conditions which differs from the first predefined string is transmitted between consecutive frame alignment words and serves to re-trigger the clock failure monitoring devices. This leads to more frequent changes in condition on the frame clock line which can be used by the clock failure monitoring devices for faster failure or fault identification.
