A network for providing sensing, communications and control is described. A plurality of intelligent cells each of which comprises an integrated circuit having a processor and input/output section are coupled to the network. Each of the programmable cells received when manufactured a unique identification number (48 bits) which remains permanently within the cell. The cells can be coupled to different media such as power lines, twisted pair, radio frequency, infrared ultrasonic, optical coaxial, etc., to form a network. networks are distinguished from one another by system identification numbers (IDs). Groups of cells within each network are formed to perform particular functions and are identified by group IDs. Communications occur within the network through use of the system, group and cell IDs. Some cells (announcers) are assigned the task of sensing, for example, the condition of a switch, and others (listeners) the task of controlling, such as controlling a light. Cells can perform multiple tasks and be members of multiple groups, and, for example, can act as a repeater for one group and a listener in another group. When manufactured, the cells are identical except for the cell ID; they are programmed to perform specific tasks for a particular group or groups. The network protocol provides great flexibility, and allows groups to be formed and/or changed after the cells are in place. |
