A hydraulic circuit for operating a vehicle cover (soft top) includes a non-return valve (23) which prevents fluid leaking from a cylinder space (6) and this locks the raised cover in position even over a long period. To lower the cover the valve (23) has its closing action cancelled eg by a pilot line (24) or is bypassed (Fig. 2) to allow the fluid to leave the cylinder.
