PURPOSE:To accurately decide the stillness or the movement of an object even when the driving direction of a photographing lens is inverted and to improve tracking performance with respect to a moving object. CONSTITUTION:An automatic focusing device is provided with a stillness and movement deciding means 102 for deciding the stillness or the movement of the object based on a defocusing amount detected by a focus detecting means 101 after a driving amount equivalent to a backlash amount in a lens driving mechanism 104 is detected by a driving amount detecting means 106 when the driving direction of the photographing lens 100 is inverted in a driving means 105, and the stillness or the movement of the object is accurately decided when the driving direction of the photographing lens 100 is inverted. |
