Fine graphite particles having uniform diameter and shape and having highly developed graphite layer faces are obtained by a simple process including a step of contacting a fibrous carbon precursor with a solvent and then removing the solvent to form ring-like and/or spiral slits in the fibrous carbon precursor which slits are substantially perpendicular to the fiber axis, a step of performing an infusibilizing treatment and a carbonizing treatment, and a pulverizing step.
