The invention relates to processes for producing a cell growth regulating protein, epithelin, from tissues of mammals. The epithelins are made up of various distinct members of a new family of growth factors which share a significant structural homology. Epithelins can be isolated from mammals, notably from tissues of human beings, mice, rats, cows or hens, for example, tissues extracted from the placenta, colon, kidneys, testicles, suprarenal glands, mammary gland, ovaries, duodenum, thymus or lung. The processes used include chromatography, centrifugation, electrophoresis, differential solubility techniques, or a combination thereof. Epithelins can also be prepared by chemical synthesis or by recombinant methods. The compositions which contain epithelins are useful for the treatment of neoplasia or of psoriasis and for promoting the healing of wounds.
