PURPOSE:To obtain, in a high yield, the titled polymer even in the vapor-phase polymerization, by polymerizing an alpha-olefin in the presence of a preliminarily activated catalyst consisting of a combination of a solid product prepared by reacting an electron donor and an electron acceptor with a reduced solid, and a specified reaction product. CONSTITUTION:A reduced solid is obtained by the reduction of TiCl4 with an organic Al compound (e.g., diethyaluminum monochloride). Then the reduced solid is reacted with an electron donor (e.g., diisoamyl ether) are an electron acceptor (e.g., n-hexane). The resulting solid product is combined with an organic Al compound, an alpha-olefin and a reaction product from an organic Al compound and an electron donor, and preliminarily activated. An alpha-olefin is polymerized by use of the preliminarily activated catalyst. Being highly catalytically active, the catalyst gives an alpha-olefin polymer in a high yield, even in the vapor-phase polymerization. The polymer obtained has high crystallizability and high bulk density, and is composed of uniform polymer particles.
