The machine (12) is controlled from a keyboard (1) having conventional typing keys (2), a space bar (4), a carriage return key 85), a back space key (6), a clear key (3) and on/off switches (14,15). The microcomputer (7) incorporates a memory (8) and a programming device (10) for selecting operational parameters. All possible parameter values can be represented on a sheet of paper and selected by function keys. The selection is performed by operation of the space bar (4) and of the carriage return key (5), and return is effected in the set-up plane by operation of the back space key (6) whereby also other parameter values can be excluded at any time.
